The South Wales Borderer was a Newton engine since 1957 and would last until September 1962.
Peter Kerslake says "4037 was a firm favourite with the footplatemen at its home shed of Newton Abbot and was normally kept in pristine condition but standards have gone down by this date and it has lost the Regimental Crest on the centre splasher as well.
Rebuilt from Star 4037 Queen Philippa in June 1926 its new name was acquired in March 1937 with a naming ceremony taking place the following month. Condemned from Exeter depot in September 1962 it had by then run almost two and a half million miles in both original and rebuilt form."
