5091 1950s Reading

Acting as station pilot shunting an Enparts siphon a hawksworth brake an van and a Damo motor car vanIt looks as though 5091, Cleeve Abbey carries an 83C ( Exeter ) shedcode in this fine view, in which case the date of the image would be between July and September of 1957 as the engine was allocated there for just that short period of time . Previously shedded at Chester, and following those two months at Exeter, 5091 had a mixed and varied career, spending time at Carmarthen, Landore, Llanelly, Cardiff Canton and East Dock and Worcester before, like so many of the then surviving Castles, it made a final transfer to Tyseley from where it was condemned in October of 1964 . From the Express Parcels and Perishables lamp code shown in this view it would appear that this photograph depicts the engine on such a working rather than acting as station pilot, the leading Enparts Siphon van, either on its way, or coming from Swindon Works, being used for all sorts of materials used by the Motive Power Depots in addition to locomotive parts .
