5004 1961 Cardiff

5004 1961 Cardiff

Heading West past Cardiff Canton Shed, photographed from the footbridge which provided shed access.

Believed to be 5004 by the length of the nameplate, type of tender and the extreme tops of the smokebox numbers just visible on the "down" "Pembroke Coast Express" and the superb condition of the engine confirms it as being one of Swansea's Landore Depot finest, complete with silver painted buffer heads even at this late date , with Landore closing in June of 1961.
Judging by the length of the train this is clearly the main portion , and has been recorded somewhere between Paddington and Swansea , as following reversal at Swansea a number of coaches would be removed for the second leg to Carmarthen and beyond .
Landore had no less than twenty " Castles " on its books when it closed , with one accordingly being sent to Old Oak Common , whilst Neath acquired ten , and Llanelly nine .
