7025 1963-07-15 London Paddington
Steam was getting a little scarce at Paddington by this time
Bill Elkins adds "Yes, your comment is accurate to a degree, but when I joined BR at Old Oak Common on the 29th June 1964, steam still had another 10 months before all (steam) locomotives relocated to Southall. Nice study of 7025 Sudeley Castle trailing to shed, shame about the run down condition"
And Peter Kerslake adds "Yes , Bill is certainly correct about 7025's condition , but it was not the end for " Sudeley Castle " as on the 9th . May of the following year she was one of the " Castles" remaining in service considered to be fit enough to take part in the Ian Allan " City of Truro " Centenary Special booked to run non stop from Paddington to Plymouth and back via Bristol .
Booked as " Standby " engine at Taunton 7025's services were required that day when " Pendennis Castle " failed at Westbury on the downward run , the Special being taken onwards from Westbury to Taunton by 6999 " Capel Dewi Hall " which was hastily taken off a nearby freight working !
The " Hall " raced the Special down to Taunton in fine style and consideration was even given by those in authority on the footplate to run her right through to Plymouth , but in the event " Sudeley Castle " performed her designated role and ran the Special down to Plymouth from Taunton."
