5018 1960c Reading

With the impressive signal gantry on the approach to Reading General from the west visible in the background of this image 5018 " St Mawes Castle " is on home ground , having being allocated to Reading Motive Power Depot following a transfer there from Gloucester in April of 1958 .
Withdrawn from Reading in March of 1964 the engine is in its final form with the improved design of outside steam pipes, and its mechanical lubricator sited ahead of the steam pipe on this side , together with the raised top to the inside valve chest cover and high superheat boiler , although it still retains its single chimney .
