4082 1956 Badminton

4082 1956 Badminton

My book tells me that this is the 3.45.p.m. from Paddington to Fishguard Harbour taking the Badminton route thereby avoiding Bristol before running down to the Severn Tunnel and West Wales . Old Oak Common's 4082 , " Windsor Castle " seems to have been given an indifferent tender of coal before she left home as she lays a formidable smokescreen across the Gloucestershsire countryside but it certainly adds to the lucky photographer's picture , unplanned as it might have been. The engine is , as we all know , really 7013 , "Bristol Castle " the pair having exchanged identities in early 1952 and never regaining their original and respective name or numberplates. This" Windsor Castle " seen here was withdrawn from Gloucester in 1964 whilst the " real " one ended its days at Tyseley the following year , bearing its false " Bristol Castle " identity to the end.
