7019 1964-07-17 Oxley
A very late in life overhaul for 7019 Fowey Castle, probably the last of her class to go through the Works at Swindon under British Railways ownership in the Spring of 1964 had been undertaken in order to keep this engine, in company with the rapidly diminishing number of other Castles, in service especially for the 1964 Summer Service additional Saturday passenger workings between the West Midlands and Bristol , a number of the class being kept at Wolverhampton's Oxley Depot for those duties , the nearby Stafford Road Depot by then having closed , and this image has 7019 ready at Oxley for just such a duty , I would suggest . The few "Castles " left in service worked down on those Summer Saturday mornings to Bristol Temple Meads , running either through , or bypassing Gloucester and upon arrival at Bristol being turned , watered and oiled on the former Midland Region Barrow Road Depot , by then itself in a badly run down state , before running back to Birmingham and Wolverhampton on a returning holiday special later that same day. By the following year, however , there were no Castles left in a fit condition to operate those 1965 Saturday special workings, apart from 7029 Clun Castle at Gloucester , and it fell to a few drafted in Britannias to fulfil that role
