7022 1964-10-10 Gloucester Central
This is certainly the eastern side of Gloucester Central, so 7022 is coming up from South Wales and about to pass Horton Road shed on its left hand side.
Destined to be one of the last four of her class left in service, 7022 was condemned from here at Gloucester in June of 1965 in company with 7034 and 5042, leaving just "Clun Castle"as the sole "Castle" running .
7022 had the strange distinction of being the last "Castle" allocated to Laira shed before going to Hereford on 9th. November, 1963 where she was to join 5000, 5054 and 5055, working in the main on "North to West" services in both directions between Hereford and Shrewsbury and thereafter being reallocated to Worcester and finally here at Gloucester.
Like her surviving sister engines, 7022 is relegated to a mundane freight duty including imported timber in this view and has a replacement smokebox door numberplate, the original clearly having "gone astray" but happily still retains her cabside number and name plates, unusual at this late date.
