5063 1965-01-19 Horton Road

5063 1965-01-19 Horton Road

Unusually for this late date 5063 "Earl Baldwin" is still bearing its nameplates and numberplates whilst on shed at Gloucester Horton Road, early in 1965.
In the happier days of the 'fifties 5063 had been allocated to Bristol Bath Road, working between Temple Meads and Paddington as well as on West of England expresses.
My records show that this, the 19th. of January 1965, was to be 5063, "Earl Baldwin"s last day in steam as it had been removed from a freight here in the Gloucester area earlier that day with a "hot box" on the middle driving axle and had come over to Horton Road shed.
Shedded at Wolverhampton's Oxley 5063 was at this date one of the remaining twelve operational "Castles" still in service, that number being reduced even more the following month, when in February 1965 a further eight were withdrawn.
Although the offending driving wheels and axle were shortly removed from 5063 here at Gloucester they were not, in fact, sent to Swindon Works for attention, as was intended, but were subsequently removed from the open wagon into which they had been lifted, and were refitted to the "Castle" before it went for disposal .
