5060 1960s Whiteball

5060 1960s Whiteball

Nice comparison between GWR Wood and concrete signal posts Paul Warner says "This is only a guess but I think this might be Whiteball. Study of the photo you will see a tunnel in the distance, and vaguely just above the last coach you can make out the roof of the signal box. The signals are the section signals for Whiteball with the distance signals for Burlescombe below. The down loop obviously fixed. In front of the bridge at the tail of the train is the up home signal with the stop blocks of the up sidings made out below" There's no help in identifying the train but 5060 , " Earl of Berkeley " was a long standing Old Oak Common engine , withdrawn from there in April , 1963 . The original signal box here at Whiteball was destroyed by accidental fire in 1955 when the signalman's oil lamp set fire to the interior of his cabin and the poor chap was obliged to raise the alarm at a nearby farm !
