5060 1962-04-28 Old Oak

This image of 5060 " Earl of Berkeley " shows one of the nameplates originally borne by " Dukedog " 3217 , which later became 9017 and which were transferred to the newly built " Castle " in mid 1937 .
The difference in the radii between the nameplate itself and seen here , and that of the lower edge of its mounting plate is clear to see , as when the plates were transferred from the " Dukedog " to the " Castle " it was necessary for Swindon to cut and reduce the radius of the bottom edge of the mounting plates in order for them to marry up to the larger wheel splashers of the " Castle " .
This feature was evident in a number of the " Earl " nameplates when borne by the " Castles " as records seem to show that some twelve or so " Dukedogs " enjoyed a short period being named after living Earls , but the plates were all removed by July of 1937 as some of the noble Gentlemen concerned did not approve of their names appearing on what they considered an inappropriate design of locomotive.
9017 , the only preserved " Dukedog " , finally got these nameplates back again in 1963 when their owner who had purchased them from the condemned 5060 kindly gifted them to the owners of 9017 .
