5055 1950s Wednesbury

‘Castle’ No.5055 Earl of Eldon emerges from the 412 yard long Hill Top Tunnel with a northbound express. It is running downhill where the gradient was 1:97, which provided a stiff challenge to trains going the other way towards Birmingham, although the gradient reduced slightly to 1:147 inside the tunnel. The tunnel’s broad gauge origins are clear to see.
