5055 1955 Chippenham
This is the "down " platform at Chippenham with a nice portrayal of Old Oak Common's smartly turned out " Earl of Eldon " waiting for the " Right Away " at the head of an express from Padddington , which it will work to Bristol Temple Meads., the next stop being at Bath Spa .
The chimney in the background is within the Westinghouse Brake and Signal Company factory which occupied a large site here.
Note from this view how 5055's " Earl of Eldon " nameplate is clearly of a much smaller radius to its splasher upon which it is mounted , a feature which dates back to when the nameplates were borne by " Dukedog " 3212 , with its smaller driving wheels and which later became 9012 .
The early " Dukedogs " which actually but only briefly carried the " Earl " series of nameplates lost them in 1937 following objections by the noble gentlemen whose titles were carried by what they regarded as an inappropriate class af engine , and Mr . Collett was obliged to transfer the plates to the new " Castles " then entering service , with modifications being made at Swindon to the lower arc of the plates in order for them to fit the larger " Castle " splashers , as seen here in this view.
From " Dukedog " 3215 no more " Earl " nameplates were fitted to any more " Dukedogs " , and 3215 , which became 9015 , would have been " Earl of Clancarty " .
Mr . Collett must have gained some satisfaction from this debacle as he had earlier intended that his new locomotives would retain the names of the " Duke " class engines which had provided the boilers and cabs for his little " Dukedogs " , but a directive from those at Paddington overruled him .
