7022 1964 Birmingham Snow Hill

7022 1964 Birmingham Snow Hill

One of the final batch of ‘Castles’ built by British Railways No.7022 Hereford Castle being ‘cabbed’ by several young spotters at Snow Hill in 1964. It had a double chimney, fitted in December 1957, and a Hawksworth flat sided tender from December 1961. It was shedded at Worcester between April and October 1964 and then moved to Gloucester Horton Road, and was withdrawn from there the following June. The tall building in the background with the S&L sign is the thirteen storey Lloyd House which opened in 1963 as the headquarters for the Birmingham City Police.

Ed Purcell adds "The beginnings of the end are in sight as the platform canopies have been cut back along the platforms. LMR have not yet got rid of the name and number plates, though the loco seems less clean than it might have been two years before"
Peter Kerslake adds "In order to cover the 1964 Saturday Summer additional services from the Midlands to the Westcountry a number of " Castles " were directed to supplememt those at Wolvehampton's Oxley shed , including a couple from Worcester , but this engine , 7022 " Hereford Castle " ( which had been at Worcester from March of that year ) wasn't one such transfer , although it was subsequently transferred to Gloucester Horton Road in October , 1964 from where it ended its days the following June.
