5024 1961-05-31 Hemerdon

This rather nice picture is from a location just past the top of Hemerdon Bank , just east of Plymouth , with the down " Main Line " and " Goods loop " signals in the left distance, controlled by Hemerdon Summit signal box which is hidden by the train and on the left of the tracks . 5024 , "Carew Castle " from Newton Abbot shed , was an early casualty being withdrawn from there in 1962 , and is assisting one of the five North British D600 Warships over the banks to Newton Abbot , and having come over the top of Hemerdon bank her driver has shut off steam for the easier run through the curves to Ivybridge and beyond
