4092 1956-11-17 Bristol

4092 1956-11-17 Bristol

A fine study of Wolverhampton's 4092 , " Dunraven Castle " running into Bristol Temple Meads on the down " Cornishman " from Wolverhampton to Penzance, complete with a nice Reporting Number and clean Heaboard and smartly turned out by the shed staff at Stafford Road before it left .
There's plenty of coal still visible in the tender and this working was routed via Birmingham and Cheltenham but my memory escapes me as to whether the engine on this working came off here at Bristol or at Newton Abbot , although my belief is that it worked through to the latter destination .
Unfortunately for the enthusiasts further down the line at Plymouth not many of Wolverhampton's locomotives ventured past Newton Abbot unless that shed's Running Foreman was finding it difficult to provide fresh engines on workings such as this when a through working , particularly on a busy Summer Saturday , might be necessary .
4092 ended its days at Oxford , being an early " Castle" casualty , being withdrawn in December of 1961 .
Paul Carter adds "During my loco spotting days (1957-64) which included spotting the "Cornishman", it is my belief that changes were made generally at Bristol but sometimes Newton Abbot. I recall 4037, off 83A, bringing the up "Cornishman" through to Wolverhampton in the Summer of 1962. Reports at the time said it may have done so twice in that particular week.

A little more research reveals that the " down " " Cornishman " was indeed the responsibility of a Stafford Road engine , invaraibly a " Castle " as seen here , that working departing from Wolverhampton at 9 : 15 a.m. with the locomotive coming off at Temple Meads and booked to return home from Bristol with the northbound " Cornishman " later in the day.
The route taken was from Wolverhampton Low Level to Stratford upon Avon , Honeybourne and Cheltenham Malvern Road to here at Temple Meads and the fresh locomotive taking the westbound train onwards from here at Bristol would quite possibly work right through to Penzance where it was booked to arrive at 5.55.p.m. "
