4093 1964-09-04 Horton Road
Peter Kerslake says - "After some 38 years in service it is very sad to see 4093 , "DUNSTER CASTLE" in this sorry state as she makes her very last movement under her own steam on 4th. September, 1964. Even her lamp has seen better days !
Based at Landore shed in happier days 4093 would have been kept in first class condition there, in common with all Landore's main line express locomotives, particularly its " Castles " , and was used on principal express workings to and from Paddington on the tightly timed South Wales expresses.
In my photograph 4093 is heading from Gloucester Horton Road shed, its cabside numberplates having been removed on shed earlier that same day and with no smokebox door numberplate or nameplates remaining in place. 4093 is on its way to the siding at Hemsted Power Station where a number of condemned locomotives were temporarily stored before despatch to the South Wales scrapyards.
My records show that 4093 was towed back to Horton Road shed a day or so later before being moved over to Gloucester's former Midland Region shed at Barnwood, used for long term storage of withdrawn engines , before finally going to Cashmores at Newport for cutting up early the following year , the final year of Western Region steam workings.
