The original Ex-GWR ‘Castle’ No 4073 Caerphilly Castle at Swindon on 18th September 1960. Withdrawn in May 1960 the locomotive was awaiting its subsequent restoration for display in the Science Museum Kensington.
Peter Kerslake adds "Withdrawn from Cardiff Canton in May 1960, 4073 spent seven months at Swindon Works before being restored to G.W.R. livery. During its working life 4073 had been allocated to Old Oak Common and then Bristol from where it worked frequently down to Plymouth in the early 'fifties before a final move to Canton in February 1957.
Still with its number and nameplates in this view a few parts have been removed, including the shedplate, the smokebox door steam lance valve with what looks like the vacuum and steam heating pipes lying on the front footplating .
A former G.W.R railcar and a saddle tank are also visible."
