Ex-Great Western Railway Churchward '47xx' class 2-8-0 No. 4706. Built at Swindon in Mar. 1923 and withdrawn in March 1964. Perhaps one of the most recognisable stations in Britain, Exeter St. David's in the 1960s is the location for 4706 with a van train. The '47xx's' were notable for their night freight running and thus more difficult to photograph in daylight hours as here.

Peter Kerslake adds "One was regularly rostered on the down Saturday 'Royal Duchy' in the late 1950s".
