3701 1910s Shrewsbury
Great Western Railway Churchward 'City' class 4-4-0 No. 3701 'Gibraltar' , Built at Swindon in February 1907 as GWR No. 3401, re-numbered in December 1912 to 3701 and withdrawn in August 1928. It still has brass beading on the splashers which were removed in WW1. It was one of the Cities that retained the original Dean swing hanger bogie.
'Gibraltar' was the second built of the twenty 'City' class 4-4-0s and is seen here at Shrewsbury in the 1910s. The first ten had been rebuilt from 'Atbara' class locomotives and inherited their (non-City) names. The remainder were built as 'Cities' from new including 'City of Truro' whose famous exploits led to her preservation.
