Peter Kerslake says "Nicely turned out by the cleaners at Old Oak Common 'Vanguard', named after the famous Battleship, is on Paddington's platform one in late March of 1959, the locomotive having been delivered from new in September of the previous year and allocated to Plymouth Laira depot where it spent its ten years lifetime before being condemned in early August of 1968".
