D818 1960-03 Swindon Works

What a splendid view of newly constructed Warship D818 Glory here in Swindon's A Shop , and what makes the picture so interesting are the two power units in the foreground , the one on the right clearly showing its shaft driven main fuel pump with the fuel feed pipes leading into the injector for each individual cylinder. The massive power unit on the left shows its V shaped design, the unit being of Bristol Siddeley Maybach manufacture , and I assume that the large pipes leading from the unit mounted above are air feed pipes into the cylinders , but they may be exhaust pipes , I' m not sure which.
Allistair Taylor confirms The engine on the right is a Gardner 8L3, no doubt for a Swindon built 204HP shunter but another correspondant Vic Smith says "The power unit on the left looks more like a pressure charged NBL/MAN 12 cylinder “vee” engine, as fitted to D600 Warships.
The large pipes are the air manifolds from the turbocharger, feeding pressurised air into the cylinder heads."
