6018 1955-04-24 Swindon Works

Peter Kerslake says "They turned them out well at Swindon Works , and resplendent in new colours Old Oak's 6018 " King Henry VI " has just undergone a Heavy Intermediate Overhaul which had begun early the previous month in March 1955.
Following a series of " Running In " turns on local services the engine will be returned to her London home .
After withdrawal in December of 1962 the locomotive was earmarked for sale to Butlins for static display at one of their Holiday Camps , and cosmetic restoration was put in hand here within " A " Shop , but the sale fell through , restoration was halted and 6018 was finally cut up here in October 1963 .
Rumours that 6018 exchanged identity with 6000 " King George V " , also withdrawn in December 1962 , the latter being held at Swindon whilst its future was decided , circulated at that time , but were wholly unfounded.
The mechanical lubricator is still in its original position behind the steam pipe in this view , and 6018 was one of the sixteen " Kings " which did not receive new front frames and replacement inside cylinder block fitted to fourteen others of the class between September 1954 and June 1958 "
