6011 1963 Swindon Works
6011 "King James I", withdrawn & stored around Swindon Works & Yard throughout 1963.
Peter Kerslake says "Sadly I cannot identify this "King", but it's 1963 and the "Kings" were being withdrawn and this one has clearly run its last mile, minus all its plates and, for some strange reason, its cab roof as well but perhaps its roof was needed as a replacement for a classmate still in service, who knows? Anyway it gives us an excellent view of the backhead complete with all fittings.
Destruction of the larger engines at Swindon Works took place in the unloved "C" Shop, not in the open air at the "Dump" where smaller locomotives were cut up, and I suspect that this one is about to meet its end in that Shop.
The workforce at Swindon did not relish disposing of their "Kings", and a number languished in the open within the Works complex for a considerable length of time between withdrawal and eventual disposal there."
