6011 1962-12c Swindon Works
Without the actual date it's not possible to be certain, but I would strongly suggest that 6011, " King James I " has been withdrawn from service at the time of this view, and is in company with another " King " ahead of it, quite possibly 6025, condemned at about the same time and which has already lost its name and numberplates, unlike 6011 which still has them intact.
Certainly 6011 and 6025 were both cut up here in Swindon Works infamous " C " Shop in early 1964 following withdrawal from Old Oak Common in December 1962, with 6011 one of just four of the class left in service at the beginning of that month, the others being 6000, 6025 and 6018.
The workforce at Swindon didn't take kindly to cutting up the withdrawn " Kings ", and those destined eventually for " C " Shop languished within the Works complex for some lengthy periods of time before the inevitable day.
One of the last and an unusual duties for 6011 was when, in November 1962, a month before withdrawal, it was used in company with 6018 at Chepstow for load testing runs across the rebuilt River Wye bridge.
I would date this view, therefore, as in or about very late December 1962
Shown as being in or about the December 1962 this view of Stafford Road's 6011 " King James I " indicates that the engine, now withdrawn from service, must have been a recent arrival here at Swindon as although officially withdrawn in or about the third week of that month 6011 was still at work on the Paddington to Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury main line as late as the 21st of that same month, being one of the last " Kings " to remain in service, sharing that distinction with 6025, 6000, 6005 and 6018
