6003 1960-09-24 near Cardiff

GWR King class 4-6-0 No 6003 King George IV at Rumney Bridge soon after leaving Cardiff with the Up 'Red Dragon on 24 September 1960. It had been transferred to Canton from Old Oak on 13 September.

Peter Kerslake adds "With a reducing amount of work for Old Oak Common's "Kings" becoming apparent in the late 'sixties it was decided to transfer six to Cardiff Canton Motive Power Depot, such transfer taking effect from 13 September 1960, with 6024 following twelve months later.
This very fine view shows 6003 on the Top Link "Red Dragon" a duty which would see it working up to Paddington from Cardiff and following a quick "lay over" at Ranelagh yard at Paddington taking it back home again to Cardiff that same afternoon.
The arrival of the "Kings" at Canton displaced that Depot's "Britannias" from these tightly timed express services, however, a role which they had filled since arrival at Canton.
