6017 1962 Stafford Road
After withdrawal - with 6012
A sad portrayal of 6017 " King Edward IV " withdrawn from service at Stafford Road, the engine having been condemned in July 1962 following a month stored out of use there from mid June.
All the numberplates and nameplates have been removed here and sent to Swindon for some fortunate purchasers, but I am at a loss to understand why the smokebox door handles were often removed, as is the case here.
There's another " King " behind and 6017 had been transferred to Stafford Road in February 1959 following seven years at Plymouth Laira from March 1952.
The note says that it's 6012 behind, and that could well be, as by September 1962 both 6012 and 6017 had earlier both been officially withdrawn and taken out of service and were at Stafford Road, whilst 6014, 6015 and 6022 were stored there " out of use " with Stafford Road's 6006 having been the first to be condemned as early as mid February.
A number of the remaining " Kings " officially still in service were similarly stored at Old Oak Common in that September but Stafford Road's 6005 and 6011 both remained in service, however, until the end of that year, probably and in company with Old Oak's 6000, 6018 and 6025 being the last survivors of the class remaining at work.
