6011 1960s Newport Ebbw Junction

6011 1960s Newport Ebbw Junction

Not the side of the coaling stage usually photographed. The three tubes and circular pipe on top of tank and the telegraph wires and insulators, extreme left above wagon, can all be seen on image:- 6840 1960s Newport Ebbw Junction.

Ray Viney says " Very unusual to see a 'King' at Ebbw Junction shed. My guess is that the date is November 1962 when it was reported in Trains Illustrated that Nos. 6011 and 6018 spent several days at Chepstow involved in test loads for the rebuilding work in progress on the Wye Bridge. Both must have visited for servicing with 6011 seen here probably coupled up to rear of 6018. "

6011, " King James I " was shown as being officially withdrawn on 21 December 1962 but on that same date the engine worked the 10.50am Shrewsbury departure fom Paddington, so it was in use right up to the end, as by this time the remaining " Kings " had all reached the "end of the road ".
6011 was disposed of within Swindon's " C " Shop but not until late January 1964 as it remained in the open at Swindon for over a year before finally meeting the breakers' torches there.
