6017 1959-11 Haddenham

Laira lost 6017 King Edward IV, one of its best Kings in February 1959 when the diesels came and resulted in the West Country Kings being transferred away to Stafford Road and Old Oak in order to work the Birmingham line.
6017 had, in its heyday, been the first Laira King to get a double chimney and was a regular on the 'Cornish Riviera' to and from the Capital, being regarded as one of that shed's most reliable performers.
6017 was specially selected to work the up 'Cornish Riviera' from Plymouth on Thursday 1st July 1954, the fiftieth Anniversary run of the 'Riviera', and Laira turned it out in fine style, complete with a special Anniversary Headboard, well worth my missing a day from school !
This image is from nine months following its transfer from Laira to Stafford Road and the engine still looks in fine condition, destined to remain in service until July 1962.

According to Ed Chaplin @ www.davidheyscollection.com Train 034 was a new service that commenced running from Monday 2nd November 1959, the 07.35 Birkenhead - Paddington. This was in connection with the beginning of work on the electrification of the West Coast Main Line out of Euston.
