6000 1963-10-06 Swindon Works
Following its earlier withdrawal from service, King George V languished in the open at Swindon Works and subject to all weather whilst its fate was decided, and the pioneer King is seen here devoid of everything except the smokebox door numberplate and in a badly neglected state. Once the decision had been taken to preserve 6000 it was moved into the more secure Stock Shed where it could be kept safe from the elements whilst arrangements were made for its future to be secured. Following withdrawal in December 1962 King George V was eventually placed in Swindon Works Stock Shed but not until after this fine engine had been left for some two years exposed to the elements in the open air within the Works area as seen here. After removing the trackwork running into the Stock Shed, and following an intention to demolish that building, British Rail insisted that Bulmers, to whom 6000 had been sub leased with a view to preservation, financed the laying of their own track in order that 6000 could be moved away from the Works, such move taking place on 9th.
