6000 1964-09-27 Swindon
Two years exposure to the elements are beginning to take their toll on "King George V", seen here in this splendid view outside "A" Shop at Swindon and following its withdrawal from Old Oak Common in December 1962.
6000 still has its original smokebox door number plate intact, but its identity is clear in any case by virtue of the route indicator discs being below the site of the cab side number plates, the only "King" to have them there as the two commemorative medallions were affixed above the number plates whilst it was in service.
A subsequent move to Swindon's Stock shed afforded some protection for this renowned locomotive before its future was happily secured, thank goodness!
