6011 1962 Wednesbury

6011 1962 Wednesbury

A fine study of 6011 " King James I " looking exceptionally well turned out and in fine condition despite this being its last year in service as it was withdrawn in December 1962 before being cut up at Swindon Works more than twelve months later.
The staff at Swindon didn't take kindly to cutting up the "Kings" in the infamous "C" Shop, and many languished within the Works for some while following withdrawal and eventual disposal.
The land in the background of these views at Wednesbury is unusual, and I wonder just what the site was being used for ?
Spending many years allocated to Stafford Road and consequently working regularly between Paddington and Wolverhampton I can only recall seeing 6011 once down in the far West at Plymouth, and that was probably due to a last minute failure of a booked "King" at Old Oak Common for a west country working.
