6016 1954 Exeter St Davids
Peter Kerslake's records show that this is the 8.50am from Paddington to Paignton, worked here by Old Oak's 6016 running over Red Cow Crossing and into Exeter St.David's.
If the year is correct then 6016 must have been one of the first of the class to receive new front frames and inside cylinder block whilst at Swindon, as the strengthened lifting holes each side of the modified inside cylinder block seen in this view show that these modifications have already been carried out. Not all of the class had these modifications.
More recent research shows me that 6016 was, as I thought, one of the first of the 'Kings' to receive the replacement front frames together with new inside cylinders. It may, in fact, have been the first to be so treated during a Heavy General Overhaul lasting from late July right through until early December 1954.
If 6016 was the first, that could well explain the very long period in the Works at that time.
