6015 1958c Swindon
In absolutely sparkling condition and newly repainted in Swindon Works 6015, King Richard III displays a single Local Passenger lamp on the smokebox, ready for a local running-in turn with a tender piled high with coal. 6015 underwent a Heavy General Overhaul from March until May 1958, and the engine has new front frames and inside cylinder block in this view, modifications which were applied to some, but not all, of the class as they had earlier passed through the Works. During a lengthy period at Swindon Works from June until September 1955, 6015 was the first to be fitted with a double chimney and soon thereafter made some extremely fast runs on the West of England main line from Paddington, reaching speeds in excess of 100mph. The modification was so successful that all the class eventually were equipped with double chimneys, as were many of the Castles in later years.
