6019 1962-05-24 Banbury
Rather a nasty steam loss here as 6019 sets off from Banbury with an express on the Brimingam and Wolverhampton main line, the photograph taken just four months before the engine was condemned.
Following a spell allocated to Cardiff Canton from September 1960 until March, 1962 this " King " returned to Old Oak Common and unlike some others in the class had in years past seen service in all the principal Motive Power Depots of the former GWR and later, the Western Region of BR, some of its fellow members of the class having spent virtually all their working lives at but one single Depot.
Records show that 6019, " King Henry V " had " done the rounds " during its working lifetime, not being one of the the class which had spent much time at any single Motive Power Depot but having seen service at Bristol Bath Road, Laira and Old Oak Common before finally ending its days in September 1962 during its final six months at that last Depot.
As suitable express passenger work for the " Kings " at Old Oak Common diminished in late 1960 the decision was taken to transfer "Kings " 6003, 6004, 6018, 6019, 6023 and 6028 down to Cardiff Canton, those six being followed a year later by 6024.
Duties for the six " Kings " saw them working the Paddington main line through the Severn Tunnel to and from Cardiff and also working to and from Shrewsbury, but their use on such rosters ended in early 1962 with certainly 6003 and 6024 being stored out of use at Canton, whilst 6019 was sent back to Old Oak with 6004 and 6024 subsequently being condemned and sent to Swindon
