WPR 20 1970-03-05 Cameron Crossing
Right to the very end of operations, traffic on the WPR ran to a formal timetable and here WPR No. 20 brings the 11.15am train from Lochhead past the summit of the line on 5th March 1970. Three weeks later Lochhead closed and movement of coal over the WPR ‘main line’ came to an end. Behind it on the other side of the line is Cameron Crossing signalbox. Towards the end of its days of service on the WPR, Barclay tank No. 20 suffered damage to the paintwork on its front bufferbeam which removed a large central portion of its number and thus defaced the locomotive is to be seen in all contemporary photographs. The arable scene is typical of this part of south eastern Fife and the railway clearly follows the boundary of a ploughed field. The track was laid throughout on a cinder ballast as can be seen here, but was superbly maintained.
