ED3 1966-04-25 Bedford

ED3 under repair inside Bedford shed on 25th April 1966, was built in 1949 by John Fowler amp; Co. of Leeds It was an 0-4-0 with a vertical four-cylinder 150bhp engine driving a mechanical transmission and exerted a tractive effort of 15,000lbs. It had been transferred to Bedford in early 1964 for Normal 0 use on engineering trains based at ‘Bedford Ballast Pit sidings’, which were alongside the midland main line, just south of Kempston Road signal box. A ground frame on the up slow allowed entry to the sidings, which ED3 worked Monday-Friday and Sundays. However it reportedly spent much time out of traffic or under repair and was withdrawn in September 1967.br/ br/The sidings closed in the late '70s or early '80s, in later years used just to store ballast trains for weekend work. The sidings stood empty for a number of years, until FCC built Cauldwell Walk TMD, this now occupies the site.
