Peter Kerslake says "Newton Abbot's shedmaster has put his 5967 'Bickmarsh Hall' on here as pilot engine to assist the unidentified 'Castle' over the banks to Plymouth, the official maximum load for an unassisted 'Castle' on the banks being eight coaches, although this was often exceeded when locomotives were in short supply.
