3340 1933-04-16 Newton Abbott
Great Western Railway Dean 'Bulldog' class 4-4-0 No. 3340 'Camel'. Built at Swindon in Oct. 1899 as GWR No. 33352, re-numbered to 3340 in Dec. 1912 and withdrawn in June 1934. The similar Dean 'Bulldog' and 'Bird' classes of 4-4-0 were typically Victorian designs, soon to be eclipsed by Churchward's radical re-thinking of locomotive practice. Nonetheless, the the type was still at work on secondary duties into the BR era after half a century of service. 'Camel' is seen here at Newton Abbot in April 1933.
