671 1937-05-17 Swindon Works

The formation of the 'Big 4' in 1923 saw the GWR emerge relatively intact. However, one consequence was the GWR's incorporation of many lesser railways, particularly from locations in Wales. Then began a cull of the less useful or worn out locomotives from these systems but otherwise the remainder were 'Swindon-ised' and had many GWR standard fittings incorporated as they were overhauled in the works. Here is former Alexandra Docks Railway 'R2' 0-6-0 Saddletank as GWR No. 671 at Swindon in May 1937 awaiting scrapping. It was built by Hawthorn Leslie in 1889 and survived until 1937 (as seen here).
