100 1970 York

100 1970 York

There were always some Peaks on shed, however this one is a bit of a minor mystrery due to its headcode. David J. Hayes comments Based on the 8M30 headcode being displayed, it's possible that the Peak may have worked to York or was going to work forward from York with the 17:10 SSuX Tees to Brierley Hill freight, which also called at Bescot Up Yard (00:43-01:13 MSuX) for traffic purposes before reaching its Black Country destination (arr. 02:10 MSuX). As can be seen from the above timings (as per the May-Oct 1970 WTT), the journey from Bescot to Brierley Hill, a distance of about 10 miles, took almost an hour due to having to stop at Great Bridge (01:28-01:32 MSuX) for Banking assistance to Dudley and having to stop again (01:53-01:58 MSuX) for un-fitted wagon brakes to be pinned down by the train Guard for the descent from Dudley to Brierley Hill. As the headcode is displayed at the north end of the loco we were wondering if maybe the loco had come off 8M30 Tees-Brierley Hill on the York avoiding line and reached the depot via the triangle (which then existed) hence the headcode display being at the north-end? Or, given that the loco is at the south of the shed near the departure lines more likely the LMR loco was going to reach the avoider from the depot via the said triangle to work 8M30 forward to the West Midlands? It's pure conjecture!
