Prior to 1900, this scene would be impossible to photograph because the photographer would have been inside Derbyshire's Buxworth Tunnel! The tunnel was opened out and the line width increased to four tracks. Heading for Manchester, ex-LMS Fowler '4P Compound' 41173 passes the small siding that once served a sand quarry.
