41172 1952-06-08 Coventry

Ex-LMS ‘Compound’ 4-4-0 No.41172 is seen standing at Coventry's Platform 2 on 8th June 1952 with the 1.43pm Coventry to Birmingham New Street service. Built by the Vulcan Foundry in November 1925, No 41172 remained in service until July 1957 when it was withdrawn from Rugby shed. To the right of the locomotive can be seen the London & Birmingham Railway water column at the end of the Down platform, which is now at the National Railway Museum, and wagons standing on the spur to the London & Birmingham shed. To the rear of the water crane was the 'incline machine', a timber framed and clad structure dating back to 1901-4 built on steel girders which was used to handle large crowds of passengers arriving back from their holiday excursions. It was open above waist-level and there was a dog-leg half way up the ramp where it turned ninety degrees on the level and then it continued to the exit located on Warwick Road.
