92220 1960-03-26 Cardiff Canton
BR Standard class 9F 2-10-0 No 92220 Evening Star at Cardiff Canton shed on March 26, 1960.
Peter Kerslake says "Fresh from its naming ceremony and following its construction at Swindon Works earlier in the same month as this view from 26th. March, 1960 "Evening Star" is recorded here at its first home depot at Cardiff Canton, its tender well filled to its capacity all ready for its call to duty.
So impressed was Canton's Shedmaster with his new acquisition that he very soon began to roster "Evening Star" to Top Link passenger duties from Cardiff to Paddington, including the "Red Dragon" and working on a daily "Out and Back" basis, but the authorities at Paddington soon put a stop to his activities and "Evening Star" was relegated to working "more appropriate" heavy freight rosters in and around its home territory.
Following the summer of 1962 spent on loan to Bath Green Park depot and working over the Somerset and Dorset line "Evening Star" appears to have spent a short time at Old Oak Common and at Oxford depots befoe being returned to Cardiff in 1963, but now to its East Dock depot as Canton had closed to steam in September of 1962."
