92245 1962-06-16 Bailey Gate

BR 9F 2-10-0 No 92245 near Bailey Gate with a northbound train on June 16, 1962. Train is heading NW under Cliff Bridge (S&D Br.217), between Bailey Gate and Spetisbury. The bridge carried the A350 road over the S&D on a reverse bend. In a book this photo appears with the train incorrectly stated as heading towards Bournemouth. This location was rarely photographed, and the bridge structure even less so from either side. The few published views were NW from the bridge, but even those seem rare.

Peter Kerslake says "Bailey Gate was at the southernmost end of the Somerset and Dorset main line. 1962 was the final year for long distance through workings over the line running between the North of England and the South Coast,. Four9Fs were allocated to Bath Green Park in June 1960, with others following later and even 92220 Evening Star."
