92220 1964-09-20 Clapham Junction
BR 9F 2-10-0 No 92220 Evening Star approaches Clapham Junction with the SCTS 'Farewell to Steam' rail tour on September 20, 1964.
Peter Kerslake says "Following its exploits working from Bath Green Park M.P.D. on the Somerset and Dorset during the summer of 1962 and early 1963 "Evening Star" was returned to Cardiff but as its previous home at Canton had closed in September 1962 it went along with other displaced locomotives from Canton, at Cardiff East Dock depot instead.
Well turned out for this Enthusiasts' Special in September 1964 "Evening Star" remained at Cardiff East Dock but sustained serious damage to the front frames following a collision on its home shed in or about March 1965, being condemned at about this time.
Although having been towed to Severn Tunnel Junction depot following withdrawal 92220 was not sent onward to one of the Welsh breakers' yards as planned but was retained there as it had been earmarked for preservation in the National Collection."
