92220 1964-04-03 Paddington
BR Standard class 9F 2-10-0 No 92220 Evening Star on arrival at Paddington with an Ian Allan special returning from Eastleigh, April 3, 1964.
Peter Kerslake says "Alocated from newly built at Crewe to Cardiff Canton in March of 1960 "Evening Star" was rostered not only to freight workings during her time at Canton, but would also appear on the Top Link passenger duties between Cardiff and Paddington, deputising for a Canton "Castle" or "Britannia", the usual choices for such workings.
The Summer of 1962 saw "Evening Star" together with a number of others of her class working the Somerset and Dorset line in an effort to reduce the high levels of Double Headed passenger services during what was to be the last year of such workings on the line.
Retuning home to Wales but now to Cardiff East Dock depot in 1963 "Evening Star" was condemned from there in early 1965 and had suffered damage to her front framing following a collision whilst on her home shed, subsequently being removed to Severn Tunnel Junction depot en route to the breakers' yards, probably to Woodhams at Barry, but in the event she was kept at Severn Tunnel Junction as plans for her preservation had been put into place , the lococmotive later being overhauled at Crewe in 1967."
