92220 1962-09-08 Masbury
BR 9F 2-10-0 No 92220 Evening Star approaches Masbury with the down 'Pines Express' on September 8, 1962.
Peter Kerslake says 92220 "Evening Star" heads the last southbound "Pines Express" from Bath, the cameraman having caught the whole of the twelve coach train at Masbury between Radstock and Shepton Mallet, the train including a mixture of a couple of ex L.N.E.R. Gresley teak bodied coaches at its the head. 92220 had been sent from its home at Cardiff Canton to Bath Green Park M.P.D. in early August 1962 for that year's final long distance through services over the S. & D. It remained at Bath after that year's Summer Services but was rostered to secondary passenger duties only before leaving for Cardiff East Dock in 1963 as Canton had closed in September 1962. 92220 also worked the final northbound "Pines Express" on the date of this view and which was recorded as being the heaviest load taken over the Mendips to Bath by a single and unassisted locomotive headed working."
Chris Naish adds "Evening Star was transferred away from Bath a week or so after heading the last Pines Express (see Ivo Peter's S&D in the 1960s). It was however transferred back to Bath in late summer 1963, when Bath shed had requested a class 5, for just two months. Evening Star could not be turned at Evercreech or Templecombe and could therefore only be used on the then lightly-loaded two or three coach trains between Bath and Bournemouth - all through trains from beyond having ceased at the end of the summer 1962 timetable"
