Peter Kerslake says "92029, the last of the ten Standard class "9F" design fitted with the Italian designed Franco Crosti boiler shows the remains of her previous design in this view from 1963 after she had been converted to the more conventional operational form.
Intended as a remedy to the acute shortage of coal, and designed by B.R.'s Brighton Design team, the ten locomotives so built proved an unhappy experiment with any savings in coal consumption being outweighed by increased maintenance, footplates constantly being engulfed by smoke, poor steaming and additional time spent by shed staff in preparing the engines for duty.
Consequently in 1958 removal of much of the additional fitments was begun with 92026 being the first to be so rebuilt, a task which took three years to complete.
