Peter Kerslake says "Clearly displaying evidence of its former Franco Crosti boiler configuration BR Standard Class Nine 92028 heads past Gloucester's Horton Road Depot with a substantial freight in tow. The lines on the left serve Gloucester's Eastgate station and with that cleared Midland Region upper quadrant Home signal it is undoubtably the case that 92028 has come up through Eastgate , probably from the Bristol area .
Built in 1955 the ten "9F's" with Franco Crosti boilers were intended for use from their Wellingborough Depot burning poor quality coal, but their disadvantages soon became apparent with large amounts of smoke entering the cabs coupled with maintenance difficulties being encountered at their Wellingborough home Depot.
Consequently, with effect from September of 1959 and beginning with 92026 a three year conversion programme got underway bringing the ten more in line with the conventional "9F" design as shown here.
